Slow mornings: breakfast on a balcony over the lake

Wake up whenever. Five rules for ruining your alarm clock — in the good sense — in the rooms that look out over Lake Lavarone.

On holiday we change nearly everything: the town, the food, when we eat, even how we dress. And then we bring along the worst part of the year — the morning rush. Alarm set, breakfast standing up, the scramble not to "waste the day".

How a day starts decides what the whole day is like. Which is why, on the lake, waking up is close to a ritual — and worth taking seriously.

1. Don't plan it

The first rule of the slow morning is that you don't set it. Up here the light does the work: it comes through the window, changes colour on the water as the sun climbs, and wakes you without a jolt. Your body takes a day or two, then tunes itself — and the alarm stays in the phone, unused.

2. Open the window before the coffee

Before anything else: window wide open, mountain air coming in, the green of the woods and the flat water of early morning. It's the fastest way to remember where you are and why you came. It costs ten seconds.

3. Breakfast isn't going anywhere

The good thing about breakfast over the lake is that it keeps no timetable. It comes to wherever you are — bed, balcony, shore — when you're ready. Coffee, bread, yoghurt with the plateau's berries, whatever the kitchen baked that morning.

You can take the time for a second coffee and look out of the window instead of at the clock. It's a small freedom, and you feel it more than you'd think.

4. The phone stays on the bedside table

The view here is quite enough notifications. Try leaving it where it is for the first hour at least: it's a luxury that costs nothing and changes the tone of the day. You'll take the photos later — the lake isn't going anywhere.

5. Do nothing, but do it properly

A book on the balcony, feet up on the opposite chair, the muffled sound of a lake waking up. There's nothing you have to do. In fact: do nothing, beautifully. That's exactly the point of being here.

Then, when you feel like it, the day actually starts: the first swim while the water is still a mirror, the lake loop of two kilometres that begins outside the door, a picnic basket to collect and carry into the woods. But later. Unhurried.

Why the rooms face the lake

It isn't chance and it isn't a marketing detail: it's the reason the building is oriented the way it is. The first thing you see in the morning ought to be the reason you came all this way. Big balconies, glazing that keeps the cold out and the view in, and the lake always there below, doing its job.

Wake up whenever. On holiday, the time should be yours.

The rooms are all different: one has a bath under a skylight, one a suspended net, one is a duplex. None of them, though, is short of a balcony over the water.
