Bau Beach came out of a question we'd been asking ourselves for years, and that guests asked even more often: why should the dog stay at home? Anyone who travels with one knows the routine — you set off worrying about where to put them, and you end up skipping the swim, or the holiday. We tried to remove the problem at the root.
What's there
A stretch of shore built for anyone travelling on six legs: parasols and loungers, shallow water you can walk into without drama, real shade from the trees in the worst hours, bowls, and room to run. It isn't a pen, it's a beach — it's just that nobody here gives you a look when your dog shakes half the lake over the neighbours.
Lake Lavarone helps a good deal: no waves, clear water, and a bottom that shelves gently. Even dogs who distrust water usually reconsider.
The rules (there really aren't many)
A lead where a lead is needed, and some consideration for other guests. That's it. Nobody needs a code of conduct to work out that a happy dog isn't one chasing somebody else's picnic: dog friendly, drama free.
The beach is booked week by week — one message and the spot is yours. For guests of the B&B, a parasol and a lounger are included.
When the sun gets serious: where to go together
In the middle of the day the beach is less fun for everyone, dogs included. That's the moment to move into the woods, and there's no shortage of choice.
The lake loop is the obvious one: about two kilometres, almost entirely flat, fine for short legs and pushchairs alike. It starts outside the door and has you back in half an hour.
For something longer, Il Respiro degli Alberi is an art trail through the woods of Lavarone: sculptures made from natural materials, scattered among spruce and beech, that the forest gradually takes back. Two and a half kilometres of genuine shade — with the advantage that your dog walks on soft ground rather than hot tarmac.
If you're up for more, the Dragon trail leads to Magrè di Lavarone, where a sixteen-metre creature made of charred wood stands in the trees — rebuilt bigger after somebody burned the first one down. From Cost it's about thirty minutes, all of it through woodland. Dogs are unmoved by sculpture, but they'll have had a proper walk.
Coming back
You return with wet fur and dirty paws, which is more or less the definition of a holiday that worked. There's always fresh water at the house, and the room has never once complained about a bit of sand.
Dog friendly, drama free. The lake belongs to everyone, tails included.
Beach services follow the season: you'll find what's open and how to book on the beach page.
